What’s the difference between talking to you and talking to a friend?

While friends and family can listen, they often don’t have the training and experience to affect meaningful change. A mental health professional can help you approach your situation in a new way– teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you learn about yourself. Furthermore, counseling is completely confidential. If your situation provokes a great deal of negative emotion, and you’ve been confiding in a friend or family member, there is also the risk of that relationship becoming compromised over time.

What about medication?

Medication can be effective, but it alone is rarely a long-term solution. When an individual’s symptoms are interrupting their ability to function and absorb new information, medication may help restore the cognitive capacity to make progress.

How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?

Sessions will largely comprise of interventions that will help clients better understand why they are doing what they are doing, and identify ways to affect the cognitive, emotional and behavioral change they want to see. Homework will be assigned to ensure that time between sessions is put to good use, and that steady progress is being made.

How long will it take?

Everyone’s circumstances are unique and the duration of counseling can vary based on factors such as your stated goals, degree of active participation, consistency of sessions, and intensity of symptoms. With consistent and active participation, you can expect to see meaningful improvements within 3 months.
